Gerard McCarthy studied at Goldsmiths College in London and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.  He started his curatorial career at The Brooklyn Museum and has since organized many exhibitions for non-profit organizations including, in 1999 Toward a Society for All Ages: World Artists at the Millennium for the United Nations in New York. He has written numerous catalogue essays and articles for various publications including Art in America.

He lives and works in New York City.
